    If you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, or other condition, be sure to have your provider test for these diseases or see a genetics counselor. For example: Providers can screen for prediabetes, a term used for people who are at increased risk of developing diabetes, since they have high blood glucose levels. Progression to diabetes among those with prediabetes is not inevitable. Studies suggest that increased physical activity and a healthy weight among people with prediabetes can prevent or delay diabetes.
